Cardenas markets were one of the happy discoveries I made on moving to Southern California. They’re a local, family-owned chain, and they maintain very high quality. They stock a range of fruits and vegetables beyond what you find in the big chains, including a lot of items you probably have to cross the border to get otherwise. Their meats are also very fresh, prepared onsite behind a huge butcher counter. Other standouts: their in-house taquerias, their aguas frescas bar, and their fresh-made tortillas warm from the oven. One thing—many of the staff don’t speak much English. But if you live down here, you should learn some basic Spanish!
The guys in produce are great. I can pick up cases of produce in 15 minutes. I have fun with them. Introducing me on spicy peppers.
